CHAPTER TWELVE
THERE WAS NO DOUBT that over time Stewart was to become absolutely captivated by the information he was being told by his very experienced cell-mate. On another occasion he asked Hoc âWhen you got apprehended fair and square could the Fuzz really do anything about getting your sentenced reduced?â Stewart queried. âDo you know if that was true or not?â
âThatâs something I cannot truly answer, maybe they could have and who knows? They have to get their information and knowledge from some source somehow or other, and if they started to somersault on their promises then the word would soon filter down the track and theyâd end up with nothing. Whatever, I believe that if I had opened my mouth, what would I have Got?âtwo years less perhaps. To my way of thinking the guaranteed monetary gain which I knew would be waiting for me on my release far outweighed two years imprisonment.
âWell for a start, I didnât co-operate so, I well knew that was going to add weight to whatever sentence was dished out to me. When itâs all boiled down, I have always looked for the method in their madness I would have to concede that others are not like me, the big âwhy meâ question comes into consideration and like I have said, they have to have something to bargain with in order to get their information. No doubt some people who are not in the know as to what goes on, canât see how such bargaining becomes a double edged sword, for some and without warning finally find themselves in a serous predicament with the lawâ.
âPlease I donât want to appear to be stupid but what do you mean by that,â echoed Stewart.
Hoc looked up at him and smiled, âI donât think you are a dill young fellow, but look at it this way, if youâve opened up your mouth and begin to spill your guts hopefully get a better deal for yourself, part of your reward is being placed into protective custody. But is it a reward? I think not, for once you weaken and open up your âCake Holeâ itâs too late, you have earned the title of a âDogâ and your life becomes a bloody misery.
On one hand you have âThe mobâ planning and waiting for the right time and chance to exterminate you, which they will most certainly do, depending on the enormity of your betrayal and on the other hand the Fuzz just about drive you insane coming back onto you again and again with further questions about this and that and what you might know.
âThese copper bastards never let up on you and as you can well imagine at the time you will practically do anything to remain in protective custody away from the mainstream of prisoners but never forget one thingâ you have now become a âDogâ for the Fuzz and that reputation spreads like wildfireâ.
When Stewart indicated to Hoc his serious intentions were about getting into the trafficking of dangerous drugs after he was released, to make some money for himself.
